International Team:
|
Sam
Bartram- Sam’s initial two week visit
to Kenya soon extended to two months, which quickly
became six months. It took an empty bank account and
a bout of malaria to get him back to England, where
he now vicariously enjoys Kenya through the volunteers
he recruits. |

|
Alex
Waterfield- Alex is the veteran volunteer in
the team, having spent over a year in Kenya doing everything
from coral reef conservation to writing for a newspaper.
Although he is currently pursuing a master’s degree
in journalism at Columbia University, he spends an unhealthy
amount of classtime daydreaming about his next trip
to Kenya, where he plans on getting his pilot’s
license. |

 |
Sarah
Chandler- One of Tembeza Kenya’s first
volunteers, Sarah spent six months teaching at Nazarene
school in Mombasa (check out the movie!), where she
quickly discovered her calling as a teacher. She now
teaches second grade at a small independent school in
Manhattan and is the go-to gal for all your teaching-related
questions. |

|
Mike
Jeynes- Tembeza’s guru of all things
technical. Although Mike has yet to go to Kenya, he
thinks the Tembeza website he single-handedly created
has earned him a Tembeza-sponsored trip. Negotiations
are currently underway. In the meantime, check out some
of Mike’s other work at www.virtualdesigns.co.uk. |

|
Derek
Lee- Derek, a filmmaker and editor by trade,
is currently making plans for incorporating a non-profit
branch for Tembeza Kenya. Derek’s resourcefulness
and enthusiasm have already garnered him enough donations
to fill a shipping crate, which he would happily put
himself him if it meant he would get to spend more time
in Kenya. |

|
Emily
Anderson- Born and raised in Kenya, Emily has
since moved to the US where she is now a starving artist,
world-class snowboarder and do-gooder of the loveliest
kind. Emily is responsible for Tembeza’s vast
array of community projects, and is notorious for poaching
volunteers from other projects to join community-related
ones. |
Kenya
Team:

|
Thomas
Mwanga- A journalist by trade, Tom discovered
the one thing he likes more than writing- people. TJ
has been with Tembeza since the beginning and is the
fountain of knowledge for all things Kenyan. TJ, as
he’s known to those close to him, is well-traveled
across East Africa. You can discuss with him any subject
under the sun. |

|
Lydia
Wandia- Lydia is a full-time social worker
who has spent time all over Africa. Lydia manages all
of Tembeza’s community-based projects and holds
positions with several humanitarian organizations, including
Care Kenya and Nairobi’s Mathare Mental Hospital.
She is driven by the desire to see radical social change
effected in Kenya, where inequality and destitution
are a way of life. |

|
Michelle
McHardy- Michelle was one of Tembeza’s
pioneer volunteers. During her three months stint as
a teacher in Mombasa, she fell in love with the country
that is today her home. Michelle is now studying for
a degree in international relations at a university
in Nairobi and is always happy to help volunteers get
used to life in Kenya. |

|
Peter
Kanyeki- Peter has been working in the tourism
and hospitality industry for several years, and coordinates
all of Tembeza’s wildlife conservation placements.
Peter is also a big indoor games fan, and whether it
is by conspiracy or coincidence, Peter always ends up
with ‘Park Lane’ in any game of Monopoly
he plays. |

|
Lucy
Mumbi- Lucy cultivated a love of travel and
volunteer work during a four-year stay in Tanzania.
Lucy’s enthusiasm and kind spirit made her the
obvious choice to be in charge of volunteer arrivals
and orientations; her welcoming smile will put you at
ease from the moment you step off the plane. |

|
Emily
Anyango- Emily has a thing about children.
When she’s not arranging various teaching and
childcare-related placements, Emily can be found volunteering
herself at an orphanage in Nairobi. Emily is very friendly
and loves taking volunteers to the city’s open-air
markets to experience the fun of haggling. |
