Our
journalism placements are becoming increasingly popular
as more and more aspiring journalists become disillusioned
with internships in the West, realising that work experience
often means nothing more than making coffee and photocopying.
On Tembeza Kenya placements, whether working for a small
weekly regional or a daily national, this is definitely
not the case- you will actually be working as a journalist!
There
are no specific requirements for this placement, and we
certainly welcome people without any prior experience in
journalism. However, the media houses we work won’t
take just anyone. Therefore, your CV should reflect a broad
base of interests, and you should be able to demonstrate
good verbal and written skills, as well as an interest in
current affairs. We will discuss this with you over the
phone, as you may have to write an essay or two to prove
your commitment to the field.
Working
for a newspaper in Kenya will give you experience of a busy
newsroom, the skills to cope with deadlines and exacting
editors, and the chance to experience life in the capital
of East Africa- Nairobi. You'll also come home with a unique
portfolio and a new understanding of the relationships between
media, politics and audience.

Kenya’s third biggest newspaper, with a daily
circulation of around 70,000. Volunteers who choose

Project
Brief: The Spectator is Kenya’s most
popular weekly newspaper and is known for its extensive
political coverage and for its caricatures. Volunteers
can expect to be considered an essential member
of a small but dedicated newsroom, and because it
is a weekly, you will have time to work on longer-form
feature pieces rather than just daily assignments.
